IMI study finds worn tyres, defective brakes and faulty lights contribute to UK road causalities

Vehicle owners are being warned about the dangers of ignoring basic faults and maintenance.

The article quotes “Around 2,000 people are killed every year on UK roads with mechanical or maintenance related problems contributing up to ten per cent of fatalities, the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) has warned”.

The research shows that over half of drivers say worries over maintenance costs cause them to ignore important vehicle checks and regular servicing at garages.

IMI CEO, Steve Nash said: “Many people ignore basic faults on their vehicles because they don’t know how to handle them or they fear garages will take advantage of their lack of knowledge.

“The cost of not carrying out important checks and getting your car regularly serviced has proven to be fatal.”

The 5 questions they recommend you ask your garage are

  • What service do you recommend for the age and mileage of your vehicle?
  • What is included in the service
  • Total cost
  • Will the garage call before any other work is carried out
  • How long will it take
